The Hog & Penny: A Must-Visit Pub Experience in Orillia

Perfect pub for a meal, drink, snack, or all of the above. I had the whole ploughman's platter and it was superb. Live music. Amazing decor. Friendly service. I cannot recommend this place enough, it is a must try.

The first taste of every item was a delightful shock. Their house made ketchup was so good, I asked to buy a bottle to take home. The Penicillin cocktail was flavourful and satisfying. The burger meat had me wondering if they imported the meat from some beef haven. Fries were crispy, golden and fluffy. They were also super accommodating to my gluten concerns.

As someone who has tried a LOT of fish and chips all over Canada, this was the best fish and chips I’ve ever had! The batter was unbelievably crispy and white fish was thick and buttery soft. Brussel sprouts were a hit, with a creamy tahini dressing. My partner enjoyed the bangers and mash. It was flavourful and the mash had a deep gravy with tons of caramelized onions. Eaton mess for dessert was decadent yet refreshing, the perfect finale. The homemade ketchup and tartare sauce were great touches. Service was also exemplary, everyone was so friendly and made us feel right at home :)

Stopped by for dinner Friday night. Thankfully we had reserved a table as it was packed but we were seated right away. We had the fish and chips and bangers and mash with some ale/cider. The fish and chips... The fish was crispy!! Without greasiness the batter was shatteringly crisp. The double fried potatoes were yum and portions were large! Hubby enjoyed his bangers and mash!

Edit: changing my 5* review to 3*. Because if this was my first experience here, I would have given them 1* for both food and service - but i do recognize potential, as we are regulars here... but not anymore after tonights experience. Our regular orders were bland, missing ingredients and just not the usual. We did the 2 for 1 starters (had brussels, scotch egg, fries and squash). Waitress told us they would do a discount on one dishes for the missing ingredient and lack of flavour (also burnt), which ended up being the exact same deal for that night (2for1) Personally, I didn't like that she thought she was putting a red nose on me and I wouldn't notice... ESPECIALLY after I heard her ter the other waitress that she told us she would "discount one of the dishes but it was the same thing" 5* review from our experience in 2024 - Brussel Sprouts, Scotch Egg and British Chips are our top picks. Great service, staff is genuinly friendly and very attentive. Cozy warm place, this is our go to in Orillia.

Sat outside and the 4 of us had a great dinner. The Hog Caesar, Mushrooms on Toast, Chickpea and Cauliflower Curry and Steak and Guinness Pie.

UPDATE came back for another live performance of Sawyer! Never disappoints! This time we ordered the fish and chips and Caesar salad. My niece ordered the steak and ale pie. The gravy when you dipped the fries into it OMG! The best! Came for the evening to hear great music Sawyer Lance was singing live!! He was awesome. Had some great food and drinks. A very cute bar great atmosphere. Definitely need to check it out if you have never been.

Stopped here for a quick lunch during a snow storm. It's a very small cozy place with great service. The restaurant itself has a friends basement atmosphere. I had the fish and chips, which was good... But the batter was a little heavy. The coleslaw was very good and the chips were amazing The Caesar salad dressing was very good, but the pork belly wasn't cooked long enough. We will try this restaurant again..
